About the blog name.
Real talk: our family travel blog is named after a gravestone.
I promise, we’re not as creepy as that makes us seem!
On a trip to Savannah, Georgia, I visited the Bonaventure Cemetery and saw the grave of writer Conrad Aiken. On his gravestone, it reads: "Conrad Aiken, Cosmos Mariner: Destination Unknown."
Apparently, Aiken saw a ship listed in the port's logs named the "Cosmos Mariner."
Usually, the ship's destination (London, Hong Kong, etc.) was listed, but this entry in the log simply said, "Destination Unknown." Aiken thought that the entry was poetic and spoke to our collective journey through life.
After all, aren't we all seeking after our own destinations? And we are all mariners through the cosmos on our ship called Earth.
I fell in love with the phrase for all of the same reasons that Conrad Aiken did and thought it would be perfect for my blog's name.
Call me weird for finding my blog's name on a gravestone, but I like the semi-creepy, Romantic (with a big R) story behind the name. I am the weird kid that had a collection of ghost and folk stories from all of the places that I visited. Most kids collected baseball cards; I was the one searching through the local bookstore for a ghost story.
I write about my life and everything in it--and I have no idea how it will all turn out.
And that's okay.
I'm perfectly happy being a mariner of the cosmos without a set destination. That's what makes life interesting!
