Bricco Bracco Mount Pleasant, SC: A Review
When
you've been nearly scared to death by a snake
and you're preparing to jump for joy (that's part II of the anniversary day, so check back tomorrow!), you need some sustenance to keep you going.
For our anniversary dinner (or lunch for all of those of you out there that aren't old school Southerners), Landon and I headed to one of our favorite restaurants in Mount Pleasant, Bricco Bracco. It's a new-ish Italian restaurant to the area (note: I call anything that's arrived since I moved back after grad school new-ish. That was four years ago.).
Bricco Bracco and I go way back. It's one of the few places that Landon and I can agree on consistently. It's also the last place that I before coming down with the worst version of stomach flu known to humankind while I was pregnant. (Short version of that story: I got hideously sick while I was about 25 weeks pregnant, spent three days in the hospital, and then gained ten pounds of water weight from the ordeal. You know you want to read all of the gory details
and
.)
I used to love their Capellini d' Angelo--and highly recommend it--but it loses its appeal after you've, uh (let me put this delicately), revisited it for nearly eight hours straight before cutting your loses and heading to the E.R.
Landon, however, still loves it and hopes that I will regain my love for it in the future.
I told him that I
might
order the Capellini for our anniversary dinner, but chickened out at the last minute, going with the Eggplant Parmesan instead.
Landon, in an attempt to ease me back into the Capellini, ordered that, and let me have a forkful.
Nope. Still too soon.
No worries, though. He happily ate his pasta, and I dove into mine.
All that was left of my dinner by the time I remembered to take a picture of it. Clearly, I hated it.
The Capellini d'Angelo
The food was delicious, as always. The portions are a little smaller for lunch, but everything on the lunch menu--hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, salad and pasta-- is only $8, so I can't complain about that.
The service wasn't great. I've been to Bricco Bracco probably two or three dozen times since it opened, and all of the servers usually are friendly and knowledgeable about all of the products. It's a smallish restaurant, so we see the same servers again and again.
At lunch last week, though, we got this woman who either 1) clearly hated life, 2) thought we looked weird, or 3) needed to find a desk job where she could sit by herself in a cubicle all day.
Whatever was going on, she was not into serving us and barely opened her mouth the entire time. When she first brought over our waters, she just looked at us, and didn't even ask if we wanted anything else. When it came time to order, she asked, "What will you have?" (four words) and didn't even say "okay" when we were finished.
She finally talked a little bit when Landon asked her about the other locations that Bricco Bracco's opening up in Mt. P later this year, but even then, it wasn't really conversation. The entire time, she only said the minimum required in the situation. Very, very weird, and very out of character for my favorite Italian restaurant east of the Cooper.
Despite the lack of interaction with our waitress, Landon and I made quick work of our food. It's just
so
good.
We went wild and crazy since it was our anniversary and ordered dessert, a slice of Bailey's Irish Creme cheesecake ($6.50), which came with chocolate chips, whipped topping, and a graham cracker crust. I thought it was very good, but Landon went wild over it.
He even went so far as to say that my homemade turtle cheesecake couldn't live up to this cheesecake. Poor, poor turtle cheesecake. It was just minding its own business when Landon went and insulted it.
Though the poor service attempted to put a damper on our meal, we wouldn't let it--it was our anniversary! Plus, we've been there many times before, so I'm hoping this was a one-off experience. The food, and the lunch prices, make this a must-do if you're in the Mount Pleasant area.
Bricco Bracco is located at 1161 Basketweave Drive in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
