Hotel Sonne: A History-themed Inn in the Heart of Füssen, Germany | A Review
After several fun days in Munich and Ettal, our road trip through Germany next took us to the picturesque Bavarian town of Füssen. The day of our arrival was grey and rainy, but we were excited to explore the city and the famous Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles nearby.
Before we could do any of that, we wanted to get settled into our room at our hotel, the Hotel Sonne.
After reading dozens of reviews online for the Hotel Sonne and other accommodations in and around Füssen, my family and I had settled on this place because of its excellent reviews and unique historical theming.

But, did the Hotel Sonne live up to our expectations?
In a word, absolutely.
Not only was the hotel in a great part of town, but the room was spacious and the theming was gorgeous. Instead of your standard beige wallpaper and generic art prints for decorations, Hotel Sonne has a historic theme that winds its way through the lobby, rooms, hallways, and even the breakfast area.

Location
If you're trying to find a base for your Romantic Road explorations, you can't ask for a better place than Füssen. And right in the heart of Füssen is the Hotel Sonne.
Everything in the downtown area of Füssen was within walking distance: we loved the fact that we didn't need to get into our car to find meals. Just outside of the hotel were these winding cobblestoned streets that we enjoyed wandering as we shopped and looked for a new restaurant to try.
Although the hotel is right next to two busy streets, we never had any trouble with road noise. Our room was located at the back of the building, and we'd occasionally open the windows to let in some cool air; even with the windows open, the noise from the cars was quite distant. The breakfast area was located right over the street, and the walls were soundproof so we weren't bothered over our meal.
The one downside of the location is the parking. There is a small lot directly next to the hotel where we were able to find a spot several times during our stay. However, we went during the low season, so I can imagine that these go very quickly during the summertime. Getting in and out of the hotel's parking lot was a bit of a challenge, too, as the entrance is located at the mouth of a very busy roundabout.
There is an underground public parking garage located across Prinzregentenplatz which is a great backup if the hotel's parking lot is filled.
If you're in town to visit Ludwig's famed castles, they're both just a quick 5-minute drive from the hotel. If this is just one stop along the Romantic Road, you'll find that you'll be back on this scenic highway in just a few moments--as you're leaving Füssen, the Romantic Road is well marked.
Room
I've stayed in a lot of hotel rooms, but none have been quite like this one! Each room at the Hotel Sonne is decorated in a unique way, and we were awed at the attention to detail that's gone into making this place so incredible.
Since there were four adults and my toddler, we booked one of the Prinzregent Motto rooms with 2 queen beds and a huge bathroom. The Prinzregent Motto rooms focus on the most important people in King Ludwig II's life: his younger brother Otto, his one-time fiancee Sophie, his mother Marie, and his close friend Richard Wagner. We were placed in the Otto room, which was beautifully decorated with backlit headboards inscribed with Otto's letters.
My daughter slept in her little travel cot (one of my go-to items for toddler travel!), and there was plenty of room to place the cot on my side of the bed.
Service
From the time that we checked in to the last moments of our stay, the hotel staff was warm, welcoming, and happy to help.
We were excited to learn that the front desk staff speaks English in addition to German. Staff members who speak Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Russian are also available to help guests.
We had a a few questions about dining, internet access, and printing capabilities while we were there, and the front desk was happy to help.
Breakfast was included in our room price, and, for the vast array of options at the daily buffet, we thought it was a great value. There are waiters and waitresses at breakfast to bring you coffee, hot tea, or hot cocoa (which was a huge hit with my toddler!), and to assist you with any questions you might have about the food.
Our daily room cleaning was prompt and efficient, and we were kept fully stocked with soaps and shampoos.
Amenities
Other than a pool, the Hotel Sonne has everything you'd expect to find in a hotel. There's a fantastic breakfast buffet at the onsite Maximilian's Restaurant each morning that comes complete with everything from pastries and doughnuts to bacon and eggs to antipasta and sliced cheeses. Although everyone in my family has their favorite breakfast items, we all managed to find plenty to sate our appetites before a long day of sightseeing.

There's another small room, Parsifal, that can be rented out for special dinners or receptions. We didn't go into Parsifal, but there was a small party going on one night that we peeked in on.
For those looking to exercise a bit, the Wellness Oasis on the top floors has access to cardio equipment and saunas.
The room also comes with free WiFi access. Of all of the places that we stayed, the Hotel Sonne had the fastest internet connection which was a welcome treat after several days in Munich without reliable internet.
Overall, this hotel was one of the most unique and beautiful places that I've had the opportunity to visit lately. Even with four adults and 1 toddler occupying the room, I never felt cramped or uncomfortable. This would be a great place to go for a memorable weekend away with family or for a romantic retreat in one of the smaller rooms.
Since there are so many ties to King Ludwig all over Hotel Sonne, this is the perfect place to use as a base for Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The costume decorations, the handwritten letters everywhere, and the information about these important historic figures is an excellent tie in to Bavaria's most famous castles.
